Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. As a young infant, Ford struggled with obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by the word association. Ford started to become attracted to acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place on her third attempt made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor would go on to have frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. She made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in the year 1991, appearing in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. The regular theatre work she performed led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate received recognition as a stand-up comedian and was added to her portfolio in 1996.
